And off to the Isle of Wight

For those who don’t know, it is the small island right off the south coast of England, sort of between Portsmouth and Southampton.

We made our ferry booking on line with Wightline.  There’s a lot of frequency on the route we took (Portsmouth to Fishbourne) although I’m fairly sure there are several other routes you can take.  Not a major point, but c. £100/$130 return isn’t really that cheap for what seems  to be a 40 odd minute ride.  Just my opinion, but I still paid it as we wanted to go.

The Portsmouth ferry terminal is only about 50/55 minutes from our place in Horsham, so not too bad.  Bit of a wait in line to get into the terminal area, but fine.  Got a couple of coffees and sandwiches whilst we waited.

Relatively easy boarding process, and pleasant short ride over to Fishbourne. Passes the well known Spinaker tower in Portsmouth Harbour along the way.

Easy disembarking process and off we went.  Quick shopping stop on the way (I had decided to leave my clean shirts at home !!), and a drive down through Newport to our hotel which was between Shanklin and Ventnor in a little black called Bonchurch.

What a great hotel.  Called The Leconfield.  I would recommend it. It’s set on the side of the hill with a fantastic view out to sea.  We were booked in by Paul the owner who was charming, and brought tea and coffee up to our great room.

Great view from the balcony we had.

We got to the hotel about 3pm, spent some time getting ourselves sorted out, then headed out to explore a bit.  Finally ended up at a cute pub – The Buddle Inn – for dinner. Food was really good – I had the Ventnor crab salad, and Betsy had the sesame salmon.  Very good food, particularly when we’d added the garlic bread.

Weather was co-operative which was great.  All in all a nice day, and back to the Leconfield for the night.
